世界上第一個實驗室認可組織是澳大利亞在1947年成立的國家檢測機構協會，即NATA（National Association of Testing Authorities），NATA的建立得到了澳大利亞聯邦政府、專業研究所和工業界的支持。
NATA認為對實驗室檢測結果的信任應建立在實驗室對其工作品質和技術能力進行管理控制的基礎上。於是NATA著手找出可能影響檢測結果可靠性的各種因素，並把它們進一步轉化為可實施、可評價的實驗室品質管制體系；與此同時，在按有關準則對實驗室評審的實踐中不斷研究和發展評審技巧，重視評審員培訓與能力的提高。這便形成了最初的實驗室認可體系。目前NATA已認可了3000多家實驗室，為其服務的具有資格的評審員約2500人。
