This test provides a method of determining the flammability characteristics of exterior, non-load-bearing wall assemblies/panels. The test method described is intended to evaluate the inclusion of combustible components within wall assembled/panels of buildings that are required to be of non-combustible construction. It is intended to simulate the tested wall assemblies' fire performance.

NFPA 285 provides a method of determining the flammability characteristics of exterior, nonload bearing wall assemblies and panels which are required to be of non-combustible construction but may contain combustible components.
The 2006 NFPA 285 Standard Fire Test Method for Evaluation of Fire Propagation Characteristics of Exterior Non-Load-Bearing Wall Assemblies Containing Combustible Components includes
·    Changes that improve the application of the test method
·    Clarified scope and purpose
·    Technical changes addressing details about the test specimen, documentation of the fire test, and testing instrumentation
·    Complete editorial rewrite for compliance with NFPA?'s Manual of Style
